Hardwood Cutting Board Care: How to Keep Your Board Beautiful for Years
A quality hardwood cutting board is not just another kitchen accessory. With the right care, it can serve for years and often look better as it develops its own character.
Whether your board is maple, walnut, cherry, or a mix of hardwoods, a few habits prevent drying, warping, cracking, and premature wear.
Never use the dishwasher
This is the important one. Prolonged water exposure, heat, and rapid drying make wood fibers swell and contract. Over time, that can warp a board, split it, or stress a glue joint.
Wash by hand with warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth or sponge.
Do not let it soak
Clean the board promptly after use and avoid leaving it submerged in a sink. Towel it dry, including the bottom and edges. Cleaning only one side can encourage uneven moisture absorption.
Oil it regularly
Use a food-safe mineral oil intended for cutting boards and butcher blocks. Apply generously, let it absorb, then wipe away excess. A new board may need oil more often at first. After that, oil whenever the surface looks pale or dry.
Let both sides breathe
After washing, stand the board on its edge or place it where air can reach both sides. Even drying is the simple habit that helps the board stay flat.
